NORDIC'S INSIGHT TO JEAN PAUL GAULTIER

We could write a book on Jean Paul Gaultier, in fact several people have. One of the most renowned designers of our time - he has broken the frontier of fashion favourite to become a household name. Even my fashion illiterate mother knows the infamous Jean Paul Gaultier.
Hailing from the outskirts of Paris, Jean Paul is one of those individuals you can say “was always destined to work in fashion” - with accounts of him designing full outfits for his mother and grandmother as young as 13. At 18, whilst he was still at school, and without any formal training, he joined the house of Pierre Cardin before moving on to Jacques Esterel and Patou. His first collections under his own name premiered in 1976 but his own eponymous label didn’t come into being until 1982. And he’s been creating lust-worthy clothes ever since, many of which we here at NP have had the pleasure of sourcing and selling and just being in the presence of.
It wouldn’t be a post about JPG without referencing his iconic Cornicle Bra moment – which he collaborated on with Madonna in 1990 or giving props for his nine year tenure at Hermes (where he succeeded Margiela as head designer) but rather than just list his many accolades we thought we’d shout out some of our favourite pieces in the store right now.
Cyberbaba Tribal Mesh Dress – 1996
One of the things we love about JPG is his early adoption of technology and it’s use in the design process – this can be seen in his clever use of prints in this collection among others.
Venus Dress – 1999
One of JPGs most sought after collections, items from his 1999 offering have been given renewed desire after being photographed on the likes of Kim K and Bella Hadid.
Butterfly Dress – 2000
Kim isn’t the only one of her famous brood that’s a fan of vintage JPG. Kendall made headlines wearing the Butterfly Dress – less bold than some of it’s tribal or dot counterparts but the front lace up adding sex appeal.
Gaultier always gets his inspiration in art, history and popular culture, and is known for his extravagant prints. Greta Garbo is generally considered one of the greatest screen actresses of all time, loved for her portrayals of tragic characters and subtle and understated performances.
