NORDIC'S INSIGHT TO MISSONI
Missoni is, and always will be, a family affair. The Italian fashion house is the first child of married duo Ottavio and Rosita Missoni, founded in 1953, with all three of their actual children taking the company reigns in 1996.
Knitwear has been the life force of the brand from the beginning; however, it was tracksuits where the Missoni’s first made their start rather than the fantastic two pieces and high-end creations that we know and love today. The couple first met when Ottavio “Tai” was competing in the 1948 London Olympics as a sprinter, he, along with his teammate Giorgio Oberweger, were producing knitted tracksuits – bottoms with a side zip so they could be put on without taking off your trainers and corresponding knitted track tops. The couple then modified knitting machines beyond the traditional horizontal and vertical stitches to create the beloved zig zags and patterns that they’ve become known for.
Some fun facts from the brands history: Missoni’s first runway took place in 1967. That same year, Missoni guested at Pitti in Florence and created another pivotal moment for the brand. The collection featured several sheer tops and dresses that you could see the model's underwear through – Rosita deemed the underwear inappropriate and got all the models to go braless, a scandal at the time that worked out in their favour and the following winter YSL put out their nude looks.
Angela Missoni took the helm in the late 90s as design director and put her own stamp on the label, created collections of bright and sporty pieces for a younger clientele. They continue to lead in knitwear, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in this medium and experimenting with materials to become a working team of artisans. Rather than being known for a single pattern or design, they are loved for their vast array and their bold colour palettes – true pioneers in their field.
